David Cay Johnston is a former tax writer for The New York Times, where he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. He is the author of Perfectly Legal and Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (And Stick You With the Bill); he is now a columnist for Reuters and a regular contributor on MSNBC.
In this conversation, we’ll discuss how tax law favors the wealthiest citizens and how it has, over time, contributed to the widening gulf between the richest Americans and all the rest. We’ll discuss the diminishing capacity of most workers to save and invest in their own futures, and how this erosion of opportunity undermines confidence in democratic institutions.
